      Thomas S. Hines, a professor emeritus at UCLA, is the dean of architectural historians in Los Angeles, the author of major studies of the pioneering modernists Richard Neutra and Irving : Christopher Hawthorne.   Sheine is also an award-winning architect whose projects have been published internationally and she has been recognized as the leading authority on the work of R.M. Schindler; her publications on the architect include R.M. Schindler(Phaidon Press, ) and her most recent book, Schindler, Kings Road and Southern California Modernism.

      This marvelously evocative book by Stephen Johnson, Gerald Haslam, and Robert Dawson--all natives of the Great Central Valley of California--is the first to explore in detail the rich natural and social history of the state's agricultural Haslam's text celebrates the tenacious people of the Valley, where hard work and ingenuity are the means to both survival and success. R. M. Schindler () Rudolph Michael Schindler was one of the seminal master architects who defined Modern architecture in Southern California.
